The following figure shows the common areas of the lumbar spine and pelvis which are involved in low back pain.

Both the L5/S1 and the sacro-iliac joints are the most common anatomical structures to cause low back pain.

The coccyx is less common, but when it occurs causing coccydynia (coccyx pain) it can be very severe.

About 10% of low back pain and leg pain sufferers will have a bulging lumbar disc, mostly seen at the L4/L5 and L5/S1 levels.

Symphysis pubis pain is common in pregnancy.
