Office work causes back pain
Statistics show that back pain is on the increase. Some even show that the rate of disability from back pain, not the incidence of back pain, is increasing at a rate of 14 times the population rise in developed countries. It costs individuals, companies and the welfare systems billions of pounds every year and the cost is rising. Time lost from work, loss of ability to do activities of daily living and treatment costs are all increasing.
Why is this happening? In developed countries such as the UK and the USA, inhabitants are more and more living sedentary lifestyles. Work and play are often based around sitting at a desk and computer, driving a car, taking the elevator, sitting watching television…. Simultaneously, such inhabitants are not taking enough of the right type of exercise or maintaining a balanced healthy diet.
Pressures of time and expectation are forcing people into spending more time at the desk on the computer or driving to the next meeting. Less time is left for balancing activities such as exercise, rest and good timely nutrition. So therefore, we might say that the curse of affluent societies is poorer health including back pain and neck pain, as the human body gets weaker, dysfunctional and bigger!
