Sciatica Symptoms, Red Flags and Treatment Options
Sciatica means pain that travels from the lower back or buttock down the leg due to irritation of lumbosacral nerve roots. Symptoms vary from sharp leg pain to pins and needles or weakness. A careful assessment identifies likely causes and the best first steps. NICE CKS
Typical symptoms
Radiating leg pain, often worse with coughing or sitting, possible numbness or tingling, and sometimes weakness. Many cases settle with conservative care. nhs.uk
Red flags that need urgent medical care
Call NHS 111 or seek urgent care if you have bladder or bowel changes, saddle numbness, rapidly worsening weakness, severe or unrelenting night pain, or bilateral sciatica. NICE CKS
How chiropractic fits with UK guidance
NICE recommends staying active and using exercise and self management. Manual therapy can be offered as part of a package with exercise, not in isolation. We combine hands on care, graded mobility and strength work, and clear advice. NICE
What you can expect with us
- Assessment: history, neurological screening and movement tests
- Targeted treatment: joint mobilisation or manipulation where appropriate, soft tissue work, and individual exercises
- Progress review: we usually see you twice per week initially, then taper as pain settles and control improves
- Home strategies: activity pacing, positions that ease symptoms, and desk or driving tweaks
When is imaging needed
Imaging is rarely needed early unless red flags are present or symptoms persist despite appropriate care. We will advise if imaging proves to be necessary. BMJ
Local note
We are based in Hemel Hempstead and regularly see people from St Albans, Watford, Harpenden, Berkhamsted, Tring, Kings Langley and Apsley.
